Pike St. Fish Fry // Capitol Hill // American // Lunch // $
925 East Pike Street, Seattle, WA 98122
Paleoness: 2 / 5
Satisfaction: 3.5 / 5
Tucked in the heart of Capitol Hill’s nightlife scene, Pike St. Fish Fry is a local staple and, as their name suggests, is well-known for their fish & chips. Though the food quality and service are top-notch, choices are limited for paleo eaters at this Capitol Hill standby.
What did you order?
- Grilled shrimp (which comes with french fries)
- Side of grilled asparagus
- Salsa verde
How many ready-made paleo options are on the menu, and what are they?
Grilled shrimp, grilled asparagus, salsa verde, and if you tolerate potatoes, french fries.
How easy would it be to create paleo options with substitutions? Examples?
Not easy. Shrimp is the only protein on the menu available grilled. All others (cod, catfish, calamari and oysters) come breaded and fried, and when asked if we could order them without breading, we were told they would stick to the grill. We also inquired about getting the Pulled Pork Sandwich without the bun, but they couldn’t guarantee the sauce was sugar-free.
How accommodating is the staff? Are they knowledgeable about the paleo diet?
The staff is cheerful and eager to please. They were stalled on the afternoon of our visit by a less-than-stellar closing job the night before, and they still managed to push out our food in 10 minutes. They answered our probing questions graciously, despite the fact that they were obviously playing catch-up in the kitchen. They may not have known much about paleo specifically, but they would have been happy to accommodate if possible.
How satisfied were you with the meal? (1-5)
We’d rate our satisfaction at a 3.5 / 5. The grilled shrimp and grilled asparagus were both juicy and good quality. We were pleasantly surprised at how well the shrimp were cooked — beautifully pink with a perfect bite, and not at all rubbery. The salsa verde was fresh and clearly homemade. Though we don’t often spring for white potatoes, we also indulged in the french fries and were glad we did. They were wonderfully crisp and salty and not too greasy. That said, our options were extremely limited. We found enough to satisfy ourselves, but would probably only return if it was a last resort.
Would you recommend this restaurant to a paleo friend? Why or why not?
For the price, it not a great deal. For $9.50 we received 6 pieces of shrimp and fries; it seems a bit expensive. So for the value, no, we wouldn’t recommend it. However, if you’re out with friends and need something easy and potentially on-the-go, it’s certainly a decent option.
Could you eat here enjoyably without telling anyone you’re paleo? (Not that you’d want to!)
Yes; however, options are limited to grilled shrimp and asparagus.
If you’re cool with potatoes, they offer Free Fry Fridays on the first Friday of every month from 3 to 7pm.
